Oil Threat to Florida… Not if…But When?

Concerns are growing that currents could carry oil to the Keys and on to South Florida but scientists are split on whether the danger is real.

Is it really rocket science? At the rate that the oil is spewing into the Gulf, it’s only a matter of time that it hits the shores of Florida. Question is? Are we going to be proactive or reactive?

Meanwhile, BP announced it was awarding tourism grants to the governor of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana to help promote tourism over the coming months, in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon spill. BP said it would give $25 million to Florida and $5 million each to Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

Once the scientist confirm that the oil spill have definitely invaded the Florida waters, it’s going to be a tough sale to convince tourist to visit the sunshine state, since Florida is synonymous too water. With the recession such as it is; South Florida businesses will take a beating, if we take a reactive rather than a proactive approach.

“I think the threat to South Florida is real and we should get ready,” said Igor Kamenkovich, associate professor at the Rosenstiel School for Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami.

It’s better to be informed rather than alarmed. So! Let’s get ready for the inevitable.
