Update on the senseless killing of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida

After much persuasion by Martin’s parents and their attorney, Benjamin Crump, various news media outlets across the country and outrage by other concerned citizens from Miami-Dade to Central Florida and across the states, Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee, Jr. reluctantly turns Martin case over to The Seminole-Brevard State Attorney’s Office for review on Monday.

Trayvon Martin was a junior at Michael Krop Senior High School at the time he was shot and killed while visiting his father in the Sanford, Florida area. Martin was returning from 7-Eleven where he had purchased some snacks and Arizona Iced Tea for his step-brother and father, when he was accustomed and subsequently shot and killed by George Zimmerman.

At an emergency homeowner’s association meeting on March 1st, “one man was escorted out because he openly expressed his frustration because he had previously contacted the Sanford Police Department about Zimmerman approaching him and even coming to his home,” the resident wrote in an email to Huffington Post. It was also known that there had been several complaints about George Zimmerman and his tactics” in his neighborhood watch captain role.

The meeting was attended by Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee, Jr. the detective assigned to the investigation and an unnamed member of the city council, according to the homeowner’s association newsletter. The chief couldn’t immediately be reached for comment about the complaints. A member of the homeowner’s association board, who asked not to be quoted by name, said she “hadn’t heard about any complaints” about Zimmerman. George Zimmerman’s phone number is disconnected and efforts to reach him have been unsuccessful.

Police Chief Bill Lee, Jr., said”there was not enough evidence to arrest George Zimmerman,” who followed Martin in his SUV and ended up confronting the teen before shots were fired.

Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett and City Manager Norton N. Bonaparte Jr. joined Chief Bill Lee in making the announcement at a press conference outside City Hall, where African-American community members heckled them.

Trayvon Martin’s family said he was a victim of “racial profiling.”
On Sunday night a press conference was held at The Miami Gardens church where Martin attended; after which family and friends sang hymns and carried lit white candles in memoriam.
